11:33 pm - Hey freaky people with children!

ztepfinat0r
Got kids? Tired of the mommy groups where they spend more time gawking at how weird you look? Frustrated with the fact that you have nearly nothing in common to chit-chat about at said groups while your children play?

For those across the freak spectrum who live in or nearish to Alameda, California, and who have young children - I have created a way to organize a freak-centric play group - over on facebook. ;)

9:10 pm - from a topic on my_island Shitty places to shop....
c_death The home-made jewelry place in South Shore, Nisha's Jewelry lack customer service and has said point blank that they do not want to cater to the freak of Alameda.

From a listing on Yelp! a long time Alamedian wrote:

"The owner then remarked to me that he goes to great lengths to NOT carry this type of jewelry in his shop specifically to keep freaks like me out of his store.
I replied "Pardon?" He then said, "That's right, STRANGE people like yourself.""

So strange freaks of Alameda, do not shop there. They do not want your business.

11:46 am - Retro Diva - Overstock Shoe SALE - Only 3 Days Left!

retrodiva1
We need the room! We are running a series of overstock auctions on eBay to clean out the stock room. No matter what the retail price we started each pair at only $9.99. There are even some boots that regularly retail for $60
- $90 that are listed for $9.99.

Don't want to fight in an auction? We also listed each item with a Buy It Now price that's reduced from the normal retail price. As long as no one places the initial starting bid you can snap up the shoes via Buy It Now without having to wait until the auction end.

You can find all the items we have on sale at the link below. This also includes some closeout items that we do not list on our website. These special sale auctions only have 3 days left, so don't dilly dally!

4:15 pm - Discovery may derail Alameda deal

retrodiva1
Pricey development might not happen if 1924 contract is valid
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/04/24/MNG3JIE6DB1.DTL

Wow, that is interesting but you know what...even if Alameda wins the case this woman might still lose her battle. With all the growth in Alameda lately if the city wins she might have just paved the way for them to buy up the land cheap and then sell it to another developer to build houses. Nothing says that the city will or even wants to make it into a park. I've been to the area they're talking about and it would make a lovely Park. The Vicar and I pick black berries from there almost every year.

10:22 am - Alameda 411

retrodiva1
I thought it prudent to post a reoccurring list of "good to know"s for Alameda. I'll repost this periodically with updates. This list might come in handy to anyone new to the island or might be a tidbit that someone who's been here awhile could find handy. I don't know much about Harbor Bay so if anyone has anything to add about that area please do. Or if you have anything you think should be added to the list please do.

Rentals - The two biggest rentals agencies on the island are:

Mason Management - http://www.ommhomes.com/rentals/index.php
Gallagher And Lindsey - http://www.alamedarentals.com/

Both require rental applications but Gallagher & Lindsey require you pay the application fee before you even look at one of their properties. I personally have found both of my Alameda abodes via Mason Management.

Groceries and Shopping -

Marina Village Shopping Complex - http://www.marinavillagealameda.com/mv_map.htm
Has an Albertson's, WAMU, Wells Fargo, UPS Store, Radio Shack, Longs, and many other handy shops

Shoreline Shopping Complex aka Alameda Towne Centre - http://www.alamedatownecentre.com/
Home to a mammoth Safeway, Trader Joes, Albertson's, as well as Office Max, a plethora of banks, Walgreens, Mervyns, Beverly's fabric & craft store and much more.

Post Offices -

Main Post Office - Alameda
2201 Shoreline Drive, Alameda, CA 94501
(510) 748-4156

Post Office - Webster Street
1415 Webster Street, Alameda, CA 94501

Post Office - Park Central
1333-A Park Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501
(this one is my personal favorite. the ladies there are very nice and it's not as crowded as the main office or as sterile as the Webster location)

Oakland Airport - http://www.flyoakland.com/index2.cfm - Super Sneaky Back Route
The way to take the back route the airport to avoid the freeway is to take one of the following streets, constitution way, which becomes 8th, or grand avenue, or park street, or broadway, or high street to Otis, which is down by the water (away from Oakland). Whatever your means to get there turn left on Otis and keep going. It will take you over the Bay Farm Island bridge, stay to the left after the bridge, and go past the Chuck Corica golf course, where it turn into Dolittle Drive. Turn Right on to Airport Drive and follow the signs for your destination in the airport. Usually takes about 10 - 15 min to get there depending on where on the island you are located.

Hotel Accomodations - Coral Reef - http://www.coralreefinn.com/
This is my personal favorite it's clean, reasonably priced, about a half a block from the beach, across the street from the Towne Centre Shopping comples and each room has a kitchenette. It's really great if your folks are in town.

A nice listing of alternatives can be found here:
http://www.alamedainfo.com/Lodging.htm

Dining - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g29073-Alameda_California.html

The list is not complete but until someone can take over the Alameda Info pages from the previous owner this is the best list I've found. Also http://www.ezdineinn.com is the East Bay's verision of Waiters On Wheels and they deliver to Alameda. Personal favorites include, Asena, La Pinata, Ole's Waffle Shop, & Yellow Tail Sushi (1315 Park St).

Theaters -
Central Cinema - http://www.centralcinema.net/

Hopefully the much debated Alameda Theater project will go forward. If you want to avoid the rumors and read details on the project go here:
http://www.ci.alameda.ca.us/theater/theater.html or
http://savealamedatheater.com/

Bars -
Lost Weekend Lounge - 2320 Santa Clara Ave
Rockabilly hang out on the weekends

Lucky 13 - 1301 Park Street
Great jukebox

Forbidden Island - http://www.forbiddenislandalameda.com/
Coming in April - Tiki Bar

Rooster's Roadhouse - http://groups.msn.com/roostersroadhouse
Usually hosts some of our friend's events

This is just a handy little best of the bay link on Alameda from 2004
http://www.bestofthebay.com/2004/hoods_alameda.html

I will add more later but for now I think this covers the basics. Please feel free to add at will.

9:12 am - Tiki Bar Coming To Alameda

retrodiva1
I don't know about all of you but my community goes beyond just goth and I lean towards the tikiarama quite often. So I am thrilled that a classic tiki bar is coming to Alameda. Rumor has it that it's going to be in the location of Lincoln's Address Bar.

OPENING APRIL 2006
ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA

Welcome to Forbidden Island, Alameda's first and only tiki lounge. Located in the heart of Alameda's historic Bay Station Shopping District, Forbidden Island will feature a wide array of classic and contemporary gourmet cocktails, served in an exotic & fun tropical atmosphere.

Featuring:

Classic tiki bar interior evoking the legendary tiki lounges of the 1950s and '60s, with bamboo huts, waterfalls, and much more

Vintage tropical drinks and modern cocktails made right: perfectly balanced, with fresh-squeezed, seasonal juices and premium ingredients

Lush, outdoor island patio

5:20 pm - Goth music at Rooster's Roadhouse, Sat Jan 28 starting at 9:pm

dogtownmax
I hope this is appropriate to post here.

My band D.I.E. is playing at Rooster's on the 28th. We are a female fronted goth/industrial trio. Opening for us is the most fantastic Left on Calliope, who has played there before and would be described as goth, and the last band is Radiostar SF.

The show is 18+ and I look forward to seeing you there.

1:03 pm - OMG - The New Safeway is ENORMOUS

retrodiva1
I popped down to South Shore last week to make a run at TJ's and I decided to pop into the new Safeway to take a gander and I was overwhelmed. Holy Crap Batman. It took me 30 minutes to get through the wine section. I took them up on their 10% discount on a 6 pack of wine and since everything was on sale the whole thing cost me only $82. Not bad for 5 bottles of wine and one bottle of champagne that should have been $35 by itself.

Everything is so clean and new and well stocked and organized. All the staff was really friendly and seemed to be in a good mood. It was eerie really.

Gary seemed to think that TJ's would be unhappy about the placement but I don't think it will really affect them because they are their own entity. I mean if you want Champagne Muscat Vinegar you know there's only one place you can go to get it.

I'm just thrilled that when I go to TJ's I don't have to get back in the car and repark to get all the other groceries I need that TJ's doesn't carry.

6:06 pm - Apocalypse - Alameda, CA - 11/26/2005
c_death Now that you have feasted on the carrion fowl, come and relish in signs of the times, the height of civilization, and the plights of modern society. This is the time of APOCALYPSE.

We have chosen Famine at this time of year to be our front rider. So you have eaten a lot already. Don’t eat on Saturday and come out and drink.

Better take a cab home. Seriously!! But there is of course food at Rooster's until 12am, good drinks, pool tables, and large seating area. Oh yes and they now have a smoking area also now, I am told.

The venue is 18+, $8 for 18 – 20, $6 21+

We will be starting a little early maybe around 8:30pm.
